Three D.C. police officers serving an arrest warrant related to animal cruelty were shot and wounded Wednesday morning near Benning Park in Southeast Washington, prompting a nearly 13-hour standoff that ended with police taking the suspect into custody, authorities said.

The armed standoff in the 5000 block of Hanna Street SE finally ended just before 9 p.m., having disrupted schools and forced neighbors out of their homes along a street with small brick houses and plots of grass. Police confirmed Wednesday night the suspect, 46-year-old Julius James, of Southeast D.C., had been arrested and charged with cruelty to animals. They said that charges related to the shooting of the officers were pending.
