Rite Aid’s downsizing amid a bankruptcy filing has continued this month with a total of more than 200 stores set to be closed, according to court filings.
An initial announcement of 154 Rite Aid locations set to be closed was released in October when the company first filed for bankruptcy.
This month alone, 55 stores were added to that list, including two in Massachusetts.
There are currently about 1,750 Rite Aid locations in the United States, according to Rite Aid’s website.
Rite Aid’s bankruptcy was not a surprise, according to reporting by CNN Business in October. The company had $3.3 billion in long-term debt, exceeding the value of the company’s assets by nearly $1 billion, CNN reported.
Selling off stores has been a part of the company’s strategy to stay afloat, CNN reported, in addition to securing $3.5 billion in financing and debt reduction agreements from lenders.
Court filings show four separate statements showing additional store closures in January, filed on Jan. 4, Jan. 9, Jan. 16, and Jan. 23.
Those are in addition to the previously announced closure of the Rite Aid location at 80 East Main Street in Webster, announced in October.
Other New England locations include two in New Hampshire and one in Connecticut.
